Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that affects nearly 5 million Americans. The most common form is secondary lymphedema resulting from the treatment of cancer, injury, or surgery. If allowed to continue untreated, it can worsen, resulting in hardened and less elastic tissue. Successful management of lymphedema is achieved through early diagnosis and treatment.

Lymphedema occurs when there is an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the body’s tissue. Increased fluid volume causes limitations in joint and limb range of motion, loss of strength, and functional limitations with activities, such as lifting and reaching. Treatment of lymphedema helps one become more active, safe, and improves the appearance of the affected limb.
